Some Recent Citations to Rand & Light in Federal Court Cases

Menominee Indian Tribe v. U.S. Dep't of Interior, No. 09-C-496 (E.D. Wis., Nov. 4, 2010) (slip opinion).  This district court decision by Judge Griesbach concerns the ongoing effort to build an off-reservation tribal casino in Kenosha, Wis., along the I-94 corridor between Milwaukee and Chicago.  (We wrote an article on this all the way back in 2001: Light&Rand, "Are All Bets Off?

Light & Rand's First Book Featured as Recommended Gaming Book

In December 2011, Indian Country Today ran a short piece on recommended gaming books, perfect for holiday gift giving.  The list includes our first book, Indian Gaming and Tribal Sovereignty: The Casino Compromise, by Steven Andrew Light and Kathryn R.L. Rand (University Press of Kansas, 2005).  The book is described as “well-balanced” and “offer[ing] a more comprehensive analysis of the industry. The authors’ succinct delivery starts with gaming’s history and details the development of Indian law and policy.”

Kathryn & Steve to Present at NIGA Tradeshow

Kathryn and Steve are panelists at the upcoming National Indian Gaming Association Tradeshow and Convention, April 3-6, 2011, in Phoenix.  They will participate in a panel on Internet Gaming: Federal and State Legislative Outlook, scheduled for Tuesday, April 5, at 9 am.  Their take on the topic will include issues related to Internet gaming that tribes should examine as tribal governments -- that is, beyond the profitability and feasibility of Internet gaming, what are the policy issues tribes should consider in deciding whether and how to pursue Internet gaming

Kathryn and Steve at NIGA Mid-Year Meeting

Steve and Kathryn are scheduled to participate in the National Indian Gaming Association's Mid-Year Meeting on October 19, 2010.  The meeting will take place at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Prior Lake, MN.  Steve will moderate a panel and Kathryn will serve as a panelist, both speaking on Internet gambling, legislative updates, and what it all means for Indian gaming.

Steve & Kathryn on Obama Administration in Latest Issue of GLRE

Kathryn Participates in Roundtable for GLRE

Kathryn participated in a "roundtable" discussion of hot topics in tribal gaming for a future issue of the Gaming Law Review&Economics.  Other roundtable panelists were attorneys Heidi Staudenmaier, Mike McBride, and Gabe Galanda.  Steve Zweig, the new managing editor for GLRE, moderated the roundtable.  Topics included off-reservation gaming, land acquisition, revenue sharing, and the NIGC.  Look for a transcript of the roundtable discussion in the next issue of the GLRE.
