Today's guest blog, by a student in Kathryn's Indian Gaming Law course, is by third-year law student Laton Lohmann.A Santa Barbara American Indian Band has made a significant financial contribution to Santa Barbara County entities, including the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department. The Santa Barbara County Indian Gaming Community Benefit Committee approved a total of $736,700 in grants from the State Special Distribution Fund (SDF) to the above agencies on May 29th, 2012.

North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue signed landmark legislation that authorizes a 30-year gaming compact with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the only federally recognized tribe with lands in the state. The legislation marks the culmination of nearly two decades of negotiations between the Band and the state.
